In 1924, Walter Hempson, 12, arrived at Albany (King George Sound), Australia, along with 6 boys from Barnardos Home, Stepney, c/o Child Emigration Society, Savoy House, Strand, London, England.

Walter Hampson went to Fairbridge, Pinjarra, and later worked on farms. After World War II he became a carpenter.

Walter or "Snow" as he was known, searched for family for over 60 years.

He said in 1984, "I've got five children and they've always wanted to know about their grand parents."

He lived in Dr. Barnardo's Home at Stepney Causeway. "My mother handed me over when I was three -- what happened between my mother and father I don't know," he said.

When he applied for his passport in 1974, he discovered that he'd been wrongly named all his life. His real surname was Child. Hampson was his mother's maiden name.
